Egg fruit also known as Canistel and scientifically known as Pouteria campechiana, is native to Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and El Salvador. We locally source the Canistel from trusted farmers. In South Florida, we come across many different varieties which have different sizes and shapes. However, very similar tastes and textures. Egg fruit is a dense, sweet fruit reminiscent of birthday cake and roasted sweet potato.
Canistel is a rich source of carotene and niacin. Carotene can help improve eye and hair health. Egg fruit can also boost energy levels due to high iron content. This fruit is available during the Winter months of the year.
Fun Fact: Egg fruit gets its name from its texture which is reminiscent of a hard boiled egg yolk.

Tropical Fruit ripens best in warm temperatures. If you have received fruit that has not ripened and you wish to speed up the ripening process, we recommend to either put your fruit in paper bags or wrapped in a kitchen towel and placed in a dry, warm area. Alternatively, you may also place your fruit outside in the sun (in an area mindful of bugs) which will also speed up the ripening process.
