Tree Tomato (Tomarillo)Regular price $58.00
Tree tomato scientifically known as Solanum betaceum and commonly known as tamarillo is native to Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Bolivia. Our tamarillo is imported from the country of Ecuador. Tree tomato has an egg-like shape and their color can vary from yellow and orange to red and deep purple. The flesh has a firm texture and contains larger seeds than a common tomato. The flavor is bold and complex similar to a ripe tomato with hints of tanginess. The skin of the fruit is bitter and is not commonly eaten raw.
Tree tomatoes are rich in vitamins, minerals, iron and potassium. The fruit also contains anthocyanin and flavonoids which help to protect the skin from oxidative stress and aids in anti- aging.
Fun fact: In Ecuador, the tree tomato is blended with chili peppers to make a hot sauce.
