Papaya, scientifically known as Carica papaya originated in the tropics of the Americas and southern Mexico. Papayas are locally sourced here in South Florida where we come across many varieties. They may range in size, color and shape. Papaya has a deep green skin when unripe. Once ripe the skin will turn from yellow to orange in color. Papaya has soft, juicy and sweet flesh. The amount of seeds per fruit may vary from few to many.
Papaya contains antioxidants, including carotenoids which can neutralize free radicals in the body. Papain enzyme in papaya may help to ease digestion and aid in constipation.
Fun Fact: Papaya seeds are used as a pepper corn replacement when seasoning foods, it is believed to have antiparasitic properties.

Tropical Fruit ripens best in warm temperatures. If you have received fruit that has not ripened and you wish to speed up the ripening process, we recommend to either put your fruit in paper bags or wrapped in a kitchen towel and placed in a dry, warm area. Alternatively, you may also place your fruit outside in the sun (in an area mindful of bugs) which will also speed up the ripening process.
