Red Dragon fruit, scientifically known as Hylocereus costaricensis is native to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We source this fruit locally here in south Florida. There are many varieties of red dragon fruit that we have access to, such as: physical graffiti, purple haze, pink panther, and common red to name a few. The flavors of these varieties differ very slightly. The fruit is a bright magenta color and is loaded with edible seeds. It tastes similar to a combination of watermelon and strawberries.
Red Pitaya is one of the very few fruits that contains a very powerful antioxidant called indicaxanthin. It is a type of plant pigment present in certain fruits and vegetables such as beets. Antioxidants may help protect the body cells from damage caused by free radicals. Red Dragon fruit is available during the seasons of summer and fall.
Fun fact: Red dragon fruit may cause your stool and urine to appear red.
