Coconuts scientifically known as cocos nucifera is believed to be native to the coastal regions of tropical Asia and the Pacific. Our coconuts are locally harvested from trees here in south Florida. In south Florida we come across many varieties of coconuts that vary in shape, color, and size. Coconuts are considered to fall into the category of drupes as they are a combination of a  fruit, a nut and a seed. Coconuts have a tough outer layer known as the husk. Once cracked open there is a thin or thick layer of white or translucent meat depending on the age of the coconut. Coconuts are different from other fruits as their endosperm contains a large quantity of water known as coconut water or juice.

Coconut is a complete food rich in calories, vitamins and minerals. Coconut water is packed with electrolytes, minerals and bioactive compounds. Water coconuts are available year round.

Fun Fact: The name coconut is actually a combination of nut, and the Portuguese word coco, after the face-like image that the shell creates with 3 holes.

Tropical Fruit ripens best in warm temperatures. If you have received fruit that has not ripened and you wish to speed up the ripening process, we recommend to either put your fruit in paper bags or wrapped in a kitchen towel and placed in a dry, warm area. Alternatively, you may also place your fruit outside in the sun (in an area mindful of bugs) which will also speed up the ripening process.
